Punat is a picturesque small town situated on the south-west coast of the Island of Krk, on the east coast of Puntarska draga (Puntar Bay). Punat is at only 8 km from the Town of Krk, and around 30 from the Krk Bridge that connects it to the mainland. Tradition suggests that the name Punat originates from the Latin word Pons, meaning bridge, because a bridge once possibly existed here, connecting the narrow passage into Puntar bay from the south. The name of the town itself was first mentioned in written documents in 1377, as Villa di Ponte. The process of inhabiting the village was slow, hence Punat is often listed among the youngest villages on the island, and today it has a population of 1800 people.

Marina Punat

The economic base once comprised agriculture, grape and olive growing, fishing, sheep breeding and shipbuilding. Presently, the prevailing activity is tourism, especially nautical tourism. In Punat, there is one of the oldest and biggest marinas on the Adriatic, its largest advantage being its position, deep inside and protected in the Puntar Bay.
In the central part of the Puntar bay, lies the islet of Košljun. There lays the Franciscan monastery built in the 15th century, which hosts ethnographic museum, zoological collection and a rich library.

Islet of Košljun

Punat is well known for its amazing beaches and coves. Some of them are in the immediate vicinity of the town, but some are hidden and only accessible by boat. Beaches are diverse, gravelly, pebble and sandy, so everyone's needs can be met. Some of these beaches carry the Blue Flag as a sign of the quality of its services, cleanliness of the sea and the shore, and of the beach equipment and facilities. Among them there are Puntar beach Punta Debij and the beach in naturist camp Konobe, not far from Punat.

Our visitors can enjoy a lot of activities like hiking, walking or cycling, playing tennis, beach volley or other recreational and entertainment facilities. Also, there is diversified offer of individual and organized trips all over the island, excursions to the Plitvice, Opatija, Pula and Venice, or boat tours to the neighbouring islands, Rab, Cres and Lošinj.
